New video from UAR: Hello Brain! An exhibition at the Francis Crick Institute

Understanding Animal Research has produced a new video that showcases the free Hello Brain! exhibition currently being shown at The Francis Crick Institute. Follow Mary and Julie as they walk around the exhibit which takes you deep into the world of the human and animal brain. Through a series of immersive installations, Hello Brain! highlights neuroscience research at the Crick, offering opportunities to learn about your own brain using the major senses of touch, sight, hearing, and smell.

Not many research institutions have the resources to develop public exhibitions, so it is inspiring to see the Crick highlight how studies involving animals contribute to the wider picture of the institute’s research and is in many cases responsible for groundbreaking biological discoveries.

This is not the first time the Crick has been celebrated for its approach to openness in animal research through public engagement. The institute has previously won a UAR Openness Award for embedding high-quality examples of openness throughout its public engagement activities.

“We had had a lot of fun at the Hello Brain! exhibit and learnt quite a bit about neuroscience at the Crick. I was really impressed by how integrated the animal studies were into the whole exhibition. We saw photos of the mouse brain and digital models of their olfactory system, videos explaining the Crick’s work using animals, there were even model brains of animals including the familiar lab species such as mice and zebrafish, but also capybara, dogs, and goldfish.” - Mary, Digital Communications Manager at UAR.

Not only are the animals at the forefront of the Hello Brain! exhibition but so are the researchers responsible for making these groundbreaking discoveries. Throughout the exhibit we get to learn about the people behind the research as well as the benefits of neuroscience for humans and animals.

“Not only is Hello Brain! packed with interesting information, but visually, the exhibition was gorgeous. I especially loved the crochet neurons, not only were they scientifically accurate but they were really cute, if such a thing is possible!” - Mary, UAR.

You can visit the Hello Brain! Exhibition at The Francis Crick Institute for free, Wednesdays – Saturdays, until late June 2025.

The Francis Crick Institute is a signatory of the Concordat on Openness on Animal Research and a UAR member.
