Following the official business of the annual general meeting, UAR organised a series of workshop and presentations to showcase just some of its activities. During “The Risks and Rewards of Social Media” workshop participants had their knowledge of Twitter and Facebook put to the test under tricky scenarios, while attendees to “How to Talk About Tricky Topics” were treated to a master class in debate by Alex Cavell from Idea UK.
The workshops were followed by presentations covering a number of UAR’s main activities. An excellent presentation by two year 7 students, Paige and Naomi, from Perins School in Hampshire demonstrated the importance of UAR’s education programme to informing on-going debates about animal research.
Fiona Fox from the Science Media Centre gave an impassioned call for greater openness around the topic of animal research, followed by Lowri Jones from Cardiff University who showed how Universities are already working to implement greater openness within their animal research programmes.
Finally, Professor Tilli Tansey gave the keynote address, “Through Paget’s Eyes”; a fascinating whistle-stop tour through the history of the Research Defence Society (which merged with the Coalition for Medical Progress in 2009 to form Understanding Animal Research), with particular focus on the work of Stephen Paget, its charismatic founder.
