After 13 years leading Understanding Animal Research, CEO Wendy Jarrett is stepping down in June 2026.
Wendy oversaw the creation of UAR in 2008 when she managed the successful merger of the Coalition of Medical Progress with the Research Defence Society. She returned to the organisation as Chief Executive in 2012, soon establishing UAR as indispensable to the UK bioscience sector in its mission to increase public understanding of the humane use of animals in medical, veterinary, scientific and environmental research. Wendy’s energy, imagination and acumen have been indispensable to UAR’s success and lie behind many landmark initiatives, such as the launch of the Concordat on Openness – the world’s first openness agreement – the development of online virtual animal lab tours, and the establishment of, and collaboration with, other organisations throughout the world promoting openness, all contributing to a safer and more stable operating environment for everyone who works with research animals.
Wendy Jarrett commented:
“Working with the UAR team, our Council and our members and stakeholders has been an absolute privilege and pleasure. I am very proud of what the UK bioscience sector has achieved in driving openness and advocacy about animal research, both at home and around the world. I’m very much looking forward to the new heights that UAR will reach under new leadership.”
Chris Petkov, Chair of the UAR Council, commented:
"Wendy and UAR's boundless enthusiasm to provide factually grounded information about the importance of the humane use of animals in research has made it possible for scientists to become more comfortable sharing with the public the basis for their research and its importance for advancing scientific discovery and public health. With deepest gratitude from the community worldwide, thank you Wendy!"
