Swine flu research

swine–flu–vaccine.jpgOur own modest contribution to swine flu information is now online, as the government estimates the number of new cases of swine flu in England reached 100,000 in the past week. Pharmaceutical companies have been talking about plans to meet the demand for antiviral medicines and vaccines. However, fewer than 1% of those infected have been hospitalised and many commentators have called for calm.

Our partner site AnimalResearch.info has developed a page on research into influenza, including swine flu. It includes information on the role of animals in the development of antivirals and vaccines, and states 'the ferret is the best model for studying influenza in humans'. Rats, mice, dogs and ferrets have all played a role, and there can be few people who are not aware that the vaccine itself is grown in chicken eggs.

The Department of Health's National Pandemic Flu Service went live this afternoon on 0800 1 513 513 or 0800 1 513 100.
