From soap boxes to stand up – doing openness as an individual

When: Thursday 18 June, 12:00-13:00 GMT
Where: Online via Teams

In the era of the Concordat on Openness, attention often centres on institutional commitments. But meaningful openness depends on the work of individuals too, those researchers and technicians whose sustained efforts to communicate about their work with animals has helped to shift the culture across the life sciences community. This webinar will highlight the vital role of individuals in advancing openness, featuring Professor Sarah Bailey of the University of Bath, recently recognised for her outstanding individual contribution in this area.

Professor Bailey is widely acknowledged for her exceptional dedication to communicating about animal research, often under challenging circumstances and in the face of significant opposition. Drawing on over two decades of experience, she will reflect on her motivations for engaging in open dialogue, as well as the key challenges and milestones that have shaped her journey.

Attendees will gain insights into how Sarah has fostered transparency and communicated to a variety of public audiences to help build trust in animal research. The session will also explore her work with the Science Media Centre, her role as a Schools Ambassador for Understanding Animal Research, and her leadership as Co-Chair of the UK Bioscience Sector Coalition.
