WRITING NON-TECHNICAL SUMMARIES AND RETROSPECTIVE ASSESSMENTS

WEBINAR    30 APRIL 2026    12:00-13:00 BST

The Non-Technical Summary (NTS) is a key part of the Project Licence application process. As it will be publicly available, it needs to be readable and understandable by a member of the public. Retrospective Assessments (RAs) are also public documents and help people to understand the results of your programme of work. Project Licence Holders, AWERB members and communications professionals all have a role to play in creating NTSs and RAs that help the public to understand why and how animals are used in research.

In this webinar, Wendy Jarrett (UAR CEO) will set out the requirements for a good Non-Technical Summary and Retrospective Assessment, providing advice on what they should cover and how they should be written. She will also discuss the Animals in Science Committee’s recent report on the NTS and RA, summarising the Committee’s findings and recommendations.

CONTAINED PATHOGENS, OPEN PRACTICES: INTERNAL ENGAGEMENT AT A HIGH CONTAINMENT FACILITY

WEBINAR    21 MAY 2026    12:00-13:00 BST

The Pirbright Institute is a world leading centre of excellence in research and surveillance of viral diseases of livestock, including zoonotic viral diseases. The use of animals in this research is essential given the complexity of the host / virus interactions.

Given the nature of the Institute’s research, some of the animal facilities are of a high containment nature, designed to protect the environment from the pathogens being used within. The restricted access of these facilities, with additional controls on entry and exit, contributed to an historic lack of openness. However, since signing the Concordat on Openness on Animal Research in 2014, the Institute has implemented innovative steps to improve transparency across the organisation.

This session will explore the different approaches the Institute has used to promote openness internally to staff.  This has included booking tours of animal facilities, newsletters, staff inductions to improve awareness of Pirbright’s animal research and the Director’s blog on the Institute’s position on animal research.
