OPENING UP: ENGAGING WITH THE PUBLIC ON ANIMAL RESEARCH

WORKSHOP    2 MARCH 2026

This workshop is for anyone who wants to feel more comfortable discussing the use of animal in research outside the laboratory or the organisation.

We will consider public attitudes to animal research and our own ethical positions, work on framing key messages and meeting objections, and think about the causes of opposition and conflict and what can be done to mitigate them.

UAR member organisations receive four free training places per year. These can be spread out across different sessions or you can send four people to one session.

For non-UAR members, the cost per person per session is £450 + VAT. If your organisation joins UAR within 3 months of the training session, this will be deducted from the first year’s membership fee.

MEDIA TRAINING FOR RESEARCHERS: THE 'HOW' AND 'WHAT' OF ANIMAL RESEARCH

WORKSHOP    3 MARCH 2026

To rehearse being interviewed on camera so that participants are competent and confident to talk about their research on TV and radio.

Television news programmes often try to include information about the research behind potential medical breakthroughs in their reports, and animal research has often played an important part in such breakthroughs. This session will prepare researchers to be filmed for a pre-recorded ‘clip’ in a larger news package. It will not prepare you for a live appearance on Newsnight or the Today Programme, but will enable you to talk about your own work to a mass-media audience.

All participants will be filmed and will receive feedback on their presentation during the day, so this workshop is limited to six participants.

UAR member organisations receive four free training places per year. These can be spread out across different sessions or you can send four people to one session.

For non-UAR members, the cost per person per session is £450 + VAT. If your organisation joins UAR within 3 months of the training session, this will be deducted from the first year’s membership fee.

MAKING VIDEOS ON A SMARTPHONE

WORKSHOP    5 MARCH 2026

This is a workshop for those who are interested in communicating animal research online. We will teach you to create videos on your smartphone so that they can be uploaded to your website and/or social media platforms.

Social media and websites are a fantastic way to share news. However, as communicating online becomes the most efficient way to tell stories, it’s important to make your content stand out. With a focus on video content, we will show you how to create and edit videos using your smartphone and how they can fit with your online strategy.

We will provide information about smartphone settings plus free and cheap applications for android and apple phones, as well as suggestions for video editing software for PC and Apple computers.

WRITING NON-TECHNICAL SUMMARIES AND RETROSPECTIVE ASSESSMENTS

WEBINAR    30 APRIL 2026    12:00-13:00 BST

The Non-Technical Summary (NTS) is a key part of the Project Licence application process. As it will be publicly available, it needs to be readable and understandable by a member of the public. Retrospective Assessments (RAs) are also public documents and help people to understand the results of your programme of work. Project Licence Holders, AWERB members and communications professionals all have a role to play in creating NTSs and RAs that help the public to understand why and how animals are used in research.

In this webinar, Wendy Jarrett (UAR CEO) will set out the requirements for a good Non-Technical Summary and Retrospective Assessment, providing advice on what they should cover and how they should be written. She will also discuss the Animals in Science Committee’s recent report on the NTS and RA, summarising the Committee’s findings and recommendations.
