New video from UAR: Growing cancer in chicken eggs

Understanding Animal Research has released a new short documentary this month, exploring an alternative model being developed in cancer research.

‘Growing cancer in chicken eggs’ is a new short film in collaboration with King’s College London. In an interview with Professor Tim Witney, he discusses the research he and his team are carrying out, imaging cancers to develop personalised medicines to target patients with therapy-resistant tumours. Tim goes on to describe the innovative new model they have introduced to make this possible and reduce the number of rodent models in their studies - a chicken egg.

The film also follows Maddy George, a research assistant in the Witney Lab, as she shows the process of growing cancer in chicken eggs, PET imaging the tumours, and subsequently analysing the data.

Cancer is one of the leading causes of death worldwide. Implementing new models to study cancer helps to replace, reduce and refine the number of animals used in research, and brings us closer to finding better medicines and treatments.
