Members of Cambridge City Council’s planning committee voted in favour of the company’s planning application, which will see AstraZeneca build a new UK base worth £330 million.

The company, which operates in more than 100 countries worldwide, can now start work on its new research and development hub on the Cambridge Biomedical Campus (CBC).

The newly approved plans will see AstraZeneca construct nearly 644,000 sq ft of research facilities at the Cambridge site. The site will include an animal facility housing rodents.

The council’s decision had been resisted by animal activist groups.
