Understanding where medicines come from – the long process from basic research, through clinical trails, to licensing and prescription – is not always easy for professional researchers, let alone young people.
The Shuffle is a fun, easy-to-use activity which aims to make it a little bit easier.
We have broken the medicines research process down into 10 main stages and shuffled them. All you or your students need to do is to work out which stage goes where on a timeline. But it may not be as simple as you think. To quickly find the solution, students will have to consider the logic of the medical research process including the role of animals (and human volunteers) within it, and think carefully about why things are done the way they are.
The Shuffle can be solved by careful thought or by trial and error and works equally well as an introduction to the subjects of medical innovation, drug development and the use of animals in medical research, or as a motivating revision tool. It can be used individually or as a whole-class exercise through an interactive whiteboard.
