World AIDS Day - 1 December

Monkeys are still essential in this research. The research has already led to the treatments which have transformed a killer disease into a manageable condition. Animal research must continue if we are to find an effective vaccine.

The use of a relatively small number of monkeys – macaques and marmosets – is still vital in many other areas of biomedical research, for example to develop new medicines and to understand the brain and make advances in malaria, infertility and Parkinson's disease.

Sadly, a hugely one-sided report in last Friday's Daily Mail ignored the enormous contribution of research using monkeys to medicine. Many of the claims in the article were false – for instance, that small monkey species are endangered because they are used as breeding stock for research. These animals are abundant in countries such as Mauritius and are considered non-native vermin. And overseas breeders can only supply monkeys for UK medical research if they have been checked and registered by the UK authorities.

We have many website resources here on monkeys in research.
