A Concordat on Openness on Animal Research in Spain have been launched by the Confederation of Scientific Societies in collaboration with the European Animal Research Association. Known as ‘Acuerdo de transparencia sobre el uso de animales en experimentacion cientifica en Espana’, it is based on Understanding Animal Research's Concordat on Openness on Animal Research in the UK and outlines the same four commitments that encourage open communications of animal research.

The Concordat in Spain has launched with 90 signatures. Animal rights groups in Spain have been challenging research centres, requesting a public debate. These challenges follow similar initiatives that have been happening in other European countries such as Italy or Germany. The European Commission acknowledged these calls in its response to last year’s European Citizens Initiative ‘Stop Vivisection’, where more transparency and information was called for.
