Non-human primates like marmosets are the only mammals that have a menstrual cycle similar to that of women. They are therefore useful in research into gynaecological diseases such as endometriosis and are also used in studies into infertility and premature birth. Special permission has to be obtained from the Home Office before any research can be carried out using monkeys.
