So why use animals at all? Is it just because it is cheaper?

No. Animal research is expensive, difficult and inconvenient. The law in the UK is the strictest in the world and every procedure needs a special licence from the government. By law, no animal research can be done if there is an alternative available. Inspectors check every animal unit in the country, on average once a month, and they don’t have to tell anybody that they are coming. The only reason that a small amount of animal research still happens is because it is essential for scientific understanding, medical progress and protecting people, animals and the environment.
