Areas of research
Animals are used in five main areas of biomedical research and product testing. The latest government figures, for 2014, show that animals were used in the following areas:
- Applied research 9%
- Regulatory testing 13%
- Basic biological and medical research 27%
- Breeding of laboratory animals (mostly for research and developing new treatments) 50%
Note: no cosmetic or toiletries after 1998 and no testing of household products after 2015
